Membership

The Value of Membership in the New York Campus Compact

1. Visibility - NYCC membership highlights presidential and institutional commitment to public service and to campus/community partnerships. It's "good company." See the  NYCC members and the national member institutions. (www.compact.org.)   NYCC’s press releases and alerts highlight institutions’ contributions and impacts to a wide audience.. 

 2. Practical Assistance - Access to training and technical assistance for faculty and chief academic officers seeking to incorporate service learning and engaged scholarship into curricula, course work and faculty research.  Support for student affairs officers and community service directors developing volunteerism and community-outreach projects. Assistance through workshops (discipline-based; thematic; best practices, current issues), national and state resources, publications and websites, free consultant services. 

  • The Regional Roundtable series has featured “Evaluation and Assessment in Service-Learning,”  “Reflection: the Essence of Service-Learning;” “Risk Management and Liability in Service-Learning;” “Building Youth/Adult Partnerships,” “Fostering the Learning in Service and Community-Based Learning,"  “Thriving During Tough Times,” “Service-Learning: The Full Spectrum,” “Global Service-Learning;”  and “Community Partners as Full Partners.” 
  • The NYCC Occasional Papers series features programs, authors, topics and best practices from across the NYCC membership.

  3.  Financial Support - Resources for campuses, communities, faculty, students: access to faculty development grants/fellowships, course and curriculum design projects; student grants for community service projects, direct financial support/scholarships; access for communities to partnership-funding sources, e.g., state/federal/corporate/foundation initiatives.
The NY/PA Consortium, funded by a three-year grant from Learn and Serve America—Higher Education,  ($430,000 annually) has provided subgrants to institutions and community partners in the two states.
The NYCC-VISTA program provides 28 federally-paid VISTA members to NYCC campuses, as well as recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation services
 
 4.  Recognition - Well-developed state and national awards programs for faculty, campuses, students, community partnerships; e.g., Ehrlich Faculty Award, Howard Swearer Student Humanitarian Award, Frank Newman Leadership Award,  Carter Foundation Academic Service Entrepreneur grants, Fidelity Fund student philanthropy grants
 
 5. Collaborations - Partnerships with state and national associations to develop policy, funding streams and legislation to support student civic engagement, campus/community partnerships, economic development.   Current collaborations with SUNY University Faculty Senate, AARP, Imagining America, NYS Commission for National and Community Service.

6.  Student Leadership - Multiple connections to each member campus through faculty and community service/service-learning coordinators, NYCC reach thousands of students in New York with information on leadership and service opportunities, awards, grants and affinity groups.  Through the NYCC Student Voice website and eight topical blogs, students can interact across campuses to coordinate convenings, including the Fall NYCC Student Agenda Conference, part of the NYCC “Elections 2008” initiative.
