Executive Director of the New York Campus Compact

Position Description

The New York Campus Compact is an association of college and university presidents and their campuses committed to promoting active citizenship as an aim of higher education.  The New York Campus Compact provides statewide leadership in advocating for, supporting, and increasing student involvement in academic and co-curricular based public service, in order to strengthen the capacity of member institutions to serve society; to enhance student learning; and to develop in individual students the knowledge, values, skills, and habits of civic responsibility and democratic participation.

The Executive Director of the New York Campus Compact is the principal administrator of the organization and the liaison to the National Compact and to member institutions.   Appointed by the Executive Committee of the New York Campus Compact, and reporting to the Executive Committee, the Executive Director acts on their behalf to build NYCC's membership, resources, and programs and maintain its leading role in the state.

NYCC is at an exciting threshold after much success in the last several years, including:

  • membership growth of 55% in the last five years
  • a budget that has doubled to over $400,000
  • VISTA program growth from 9 to 28 sites 
  • conferences conducted or co-sponsored by NYCC have increased from 3 to over 20 annually
  • legislation supportive of community-based learning and campus/community partnerships in NY has been developed in both Assembly and Senate thanks to NYCC leadership
  • NYCC has provided access to over $1.2 million in grants to its members.  

Federal and state policies now place high priority on civic participation, volunteerism, national service and campus/community collaborations.  NYCC's opportunities will continue to expand to new areas and new services to member campuses.
In this role you will:

  • use exceptional leadership and supervisory skills to coordinate and expand membership and services of the New York Campus Compact
  • establish and maintain highly collaborative and effective working relationships with a broad and diverse group of leaders across higher education and local, state and federal government and community agencies
  • apply exceptional communication skills, including an ability to build support for  complex concepts, ideas, and issues to broad audiences.
  • employ excellent analytical and organizational skills and demonstrate the skill to harness information technology to support organizational development

Qualifications 

  • Masters with 3-5 years experience of successful leadership experience in higher education and/or non-profit organizations, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Knowledge of campus-based service and service learning programs.
  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills, including ability to interact effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Financial management experience, including budget development and oversight and financial reporting.
  • Public relations and marketing skills. 
  • Successful grant writing and grant acquisition experience.
  • Must possess good judgment, initiative and be able to work independently.
  • Strong computer database, word-processing and web-based skills.
  • Familiarity with internet and web applications and the use of social networking sites in marketing desirable.
  • Flexibility to travel.
  • Campus experience in higher education desirable.

AMHERST COLLEGE
MANAGER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

Amherst College seeks a Manager of Internship Programs to join the Career Center and Center for Community Engagement teams.  Reporting to the Directors of the Career Center (CC) and Center for Community Engagement (CCE), the Manager will work collaboratively with CC/CCE team members to advise and educate underclass students about all aspects of the internship search process and help them secure and make the most of challenging intern opportunities.  The CCE portion of the position is grant-funded.

Amherst College is a private, co-educational, liberal arts institution with over 1700 students and 190 faculty located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts.  Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts in the Five-College Consortium.

Specific duties will include the management of the newly created Amherst Select Internship Program and continued development of a public service internship program.  Position will provide individual and group advising, create and deliver skill development workshops, and identify and implement panels, events and programs.  Provide general career advising to students/alumni; host weekly drop-in hours; and engage in other activities (e.g. orientation, homecoming, alumni events) as deemed necessary.  The position requires occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

Qualifications:  Master’s degree and professional experience in program development and management of domestic/international internship programs strongly preferred.  A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years’ professional experience in higher education, counseling, career advising or human resources required.  Excellent communication, project and relationship management, presentation and organizational skills.  Experience developing and facilitating panels, programs and events.  Must be team-oriented with the ability to work well with other staff members in the development and administration of programs with the Career Center, the Center for Community Engagement and throughout the college.

Job Description: The Director of Civic Engagement and Leadership Development is a key leadership position in the Division of Student Affairs. Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Associate Vice President for Student Life, the Director of Civic Engagement is responsible for coordination of a number of civic engagement and student leadership programs for the campus community. They are actively engaged in the delivery of program development, delivery of programs and program evaluation for the following areas: civic engagement and community service; peer leadership advising, student leadership programming, Greek life and the effective infusion of these activities into the Student Leadership Center. This position is expected to develop activities that expose our students to active involvement in civic, leadership, social, cultural, intellectual, recreational, and governance programs that complement our academic mission in the preparation of good citizens and future leaders. The focus of this position is on enhancement of civic engagement programs, development of new student leadership programs, oversight of experiential education activities in the Student Leadership Center, preparation of all student leadership presenters, and club leadership development.

The Director is also responsible for the overall development, organization, management and supervision of a comprehensive Greek Life program that meets the needs of Alfred State College students, faculty and staff. Civic engagement, student leadership development and Greek Life are programs are built on the mission of the College and reflect sound student development philosophy in that they strive to contribute to the growth, development and education of students.
-Researches current trends and best practices for the delivery of civic engagement opportunities, student leadership development programs, and experiential education.
-Actively promote civic engagement and student leadership development opportunities with regularity so that the campus achieves maximum participation from its students (annual participation benchmark set by VPSA).
-Coordinate all major student leadership retreats, campus student leadership workshop series and serve in leadership role in campus coordinated effort in the delivery of student leadership training opportunities. Present workshops to students and student leaders where appropriate.
-Supervise the student Coordinator of Community Service and Activism (student position) to coordinate campus-wide community service initiatives.
-Serve as campus representative to Campus Compact. Develop and coordinate alternative Spring Break program for students regarding civic engagement/student leadership development.

-Complete annual report on student and community participation rates in civic engagement, student leadership development programs and experiential education, the effectiveness of these programs and periodically assess student learning outcomes for select programs biannually.
-Supervise all aspects of Greek life at Alfred State College, including monitoring and evaluating individual groups' annual achievement of the four tenets and their associated standards denoted in the campus relationship statement with individual organizations and Greek Senate. Serve as primary Advisor to the Greek Senate.
-Act as a primary liaison to all recognized fraternities and sororities and their advisors. Maintain communication with, monitoring and training related to recruitment, pledging, Greek events and Greek Senate activities.
-Serve as a member of the Orientation Committee.
-Assist the Associate Vice President and the Director of Student Activities in the supervision of major campus events during Family Weekend, Homecoming, and Hot Dog Day along with other major campus-wide events.

This is a full-time, 12 month position.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Masters' Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Leadership Studies or related field is required. Experience in the following is critical to the position:
- Development of civic engagement opportunities.
- Development and presentation of leadership training whether at the workshop level or multi-day retreat level.
- Experience with advising students and student organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Leadership experience within a Greek organization.
-Affiliation with a Greek Letter organization is strongly preferred.
-Trained in experiential education curriculums (Project Adventure; Outward Bound) that are appropriate to the pedagogical designs required to effectively plan civic engagement and student leadership programs.

Director, Upward Bound Program
Cornell University

Cornell University invites applications for the Director position of its Upward Bound Program.  The program provides opportunities for participants, 10th and 11th graders from Groton and Elmira, to succeed in pre-college academic performance and ultimately in higher education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.
The program primarily serves students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a Bachelor's degree.

The Director provides strategic and inspirational leadership, supervision, direction and coordination for all aspects of the Upward Bound program. This includes preparing and maintaining all grant proposals, reports and required records, conducting required evaluation, managing budgets, supervising the Assistant Director, and summer teaching staff, and school-year volunteers, overseeing and participating in the recruitment and selection of 50 Upward Bound participants, and maintaining communication with parents, schools, community partners, and university offices and collaborating units.  The Director is responsible for oversight of curriculum development and needs assessment, counseling participants and parents/guardians, providing training for instructors and leading workshops. No vacation is allowed during the 6-week summer residential component of the Upward Bound program.  The position requires evening and weekend availability throughout the year.

The successful candidate will have leadership experience in related education programs and a record of achievement demonstrating the ability to develop, implement and sustain the Upward Bound Program. 
The position reports dually to the University Associate Provost for Outreach and the Executive Director of the Cornell Public Service Center, where the program will be housed.  This is a 12-month, full-time, three-year term appointment with possible renewal.

Qualifications:  The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years full-time experience or equivalent combination and successful experience in program development and management, ideally serving low-income and diverse populations.  Experience with some combination of curriculum development, instructional and tutorial experience, budget development and management is needed.  The Director will need excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficiency with Word and Excel (database management packages, communication software, desktop publishing, etc.).  Travel to participants' communities will require reliable transportation and valid NYS Drivers license and ability to work evening and weekends. The candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced and busy office. Prior experience in a federal TRIO or related program is highly desirable.

Community Outreach Language & Literacy Program Coordinator
